It will be interesting to see with what STALKER comes up with as they are relying very heavily on sampled textures from RL. The most scary and convincing monsters for me were the utterly godless Quake and System Shock 2. I think it's probably a lot more difficult to create a monster than it is to create soldiers.
I did wonder about this in HL- it might be because the artists don't have a real world reference from which to base models/animations/textures etc on. trigens with the sniper, the big ones 'wake up', and follow you to the door (at. They just don't quite sit right in the enviroment- with me anyway. The Far Cry story isnt going to break many hearts, I dont think. I mean I shed my load a few times in those complexes after bumping into them! As with Half Life (though to a lesser extent in my view), the level of detail, in short, the verisimilitude of the monsters falls a little short of the otherwise extremely lifelike world. That doesn't mean I thought they were poor, just not quite up to the otherwise A1 stuff. Also the visual design of them was not as strong as other aspects of the game. My observation is that the characterisation of the monsters in FarCry was a little weak and a bit cliched. The technology in HL was a bit young also. I know that in design, form and function are intertwined- ie they were presented as visually disjunct so as to emphasise their 'alienness', but it didn't work for me. The two worlds seemed very disjunct to me.
It's kinda related to what someone else on this site alluded to when they said of Half Life that they considered the game over when they reached the gate to the alien dimension.
